Intervention for Addiction...

...to be free again

Brunswick Care provides an international Intervention and Assertive Outreach and Treatment Service for the family, friends and colleagues of individuals who are addicted to drugs, alcohol and other destructive behaviours, such as eating disorders, gambling, sex and love addiction, co-dependency, self harm, risk taking and other compulsive disorders.

Pioneered by Dr Vernon Johnson in the USA, "Intervention" is an effective way of helping a person suffering with addiction to move forward and accept help.

Fundamentally, the intervention process is rooted in genuine care and concern for the addicted person, enabling them to face the reality of their situation and to get the help that they need.

Interventions are neither a "witch hunt" nor a malicious "set up" but a genuine effort by people who care for someone who is causing harm to themselves and others through their actions. This loving confrontation by family and friends, along with the guidance of a trained specialist, helps the individual to break through the web of denial which keeps them in their destructive behaviour and to move forward and receive help.

Our intervention service is overseen by Nick Gully, a leading UK Addiction Therapist who is a trained and qualified Therapist and Interventionist who has worked in the field for 20 years. Nick is the previous Director of Addiction Services at the Priory Hospital, London the Clinical Manager at Lifeworks in Surrey and has carried out successful interventions in the UK, USA, Europe and Asia.

Each of our Interventionists are trained and experienced addiction specialists who have also undertaken specialist training in leading successful interventions.

Although each intervention process is tailored to the individual circumstances of the clients, the typical format will be:

Stage 1 - Enquiry

This where we gather all appropriate information in order to develop a basic understanding of the issue, to make a preliminary diagnosis and to plan for the next stage. This is usually conducted over the telephone as part of the initial enquiry and enables the caller and our team to decide whether or not an intervention would be appropriate.

Stage 2 - Planning Meeting

During this stage one of our Interventionists meet with those people concerned about the addicted person and develop a conceptionalisation of the situation along with corresponding strategies, protocols and plans for intervention and treatment.

Stage 3 - Intervention Meeting

During this stage the "intervention team" meet with the addicted person and communicate concerns, feelings and boundaries to them and ask them to enter into a treatment process.

Stage 4 - Treatment

During this stage the addicted person enters into and engages with an appropriate form of addiction treatment. A member of our team will continue to act as a Care Manager, ensuring that the treatment process runs smoothly, that family member are kept informed of developments, that a suitable blocking strategy is in place if the addicted person wishes to leave treatment and that suitable follow-up and aftercare plans are in place.

Stage 5 - Follow-up and Aftercare

During this stage the appropriate follow-up and aftercare plans are put into place, to ensure that ongoing support and help are available to the recovering person and their family.

92% of those people who receive an intervention agree to go into treatment and take the opportunity to change their lives for the better.
